From Y2k" to Data Warehouses and Other Beneecial Impacts of the Millenium Problem

It is by now a common experience that Y2K-projects tend to be complex, time-consuming and risky as well as that they can cause considerable costs. Because they belong to the class of corrective maintenance projects, not too many bene ts can be expected from such projects at a rst sight. But if they are managed in a proper way, the foundation for several important future bene ts can be layed. In this paper, two groups of such future bene ts are distinguished and explained. One group encompasses bene ts from a maintainers perspective. If done well, Y2K-projects can have a considerable impact on the way the operational systems of an enterprise can be maintained in the future. But the impact of a Y2K-project can go far beyond the improvement of maintenance alone. There is a second group of bene ts to gain which can have an enterprise-wide impact. As a prominent example, the implementation of a data-warehouse is described.
